Singapore, a vibrant melting pot of cultures, often highlights its Chinese and Indian influences. However, the nation also deeply values its rich Malay heritage, a cornerstone of its identity. This commitment was evident at the recent “Lestari Bahasa, Perkasa Budaya” (Sustainable Language, Powerful Culture) event held on October 13th, 2024, at the Jalan Besar Cultural Center in the historic Kampung Glam district.  

Organized in conjunction with Language Month 2024, the event offered a free and engaging platform to celebrate the Malay language and culture. Attendees were treated to complimentary refreshments, door gifts, and an afternoon filled with captivating performances and insightful discussions.

The event was graced by the presence of Ms. Denise Hua, a representative of the Singaporean government, underscoring the nation’s dedication to preserving its Malay heritage. Farhana M. Noor, a renowned artist and Malay Language Ambassador in Singapore, skillfully guided the proceedings as the Master of Ceremonies.

The highlight of the event was the mesmerizing performance by the Temasek Malay Orchestra. Named after Singapore’s historical moniker, the orchestra showcased the beauty and diversity of Malay music, captivating the audience with traditional melodies and rhythms.

This vibrant celebration of Malay culture was witnessed by Mr. Aris Winarna from Penpro, who was on a working visit to Singapore. His presence highlights the regional interest in Singapore’s efforts to preserve its cultural heritage.

Singapore’s Malay Heritage: A Rich Tapestry

Before the arrival of the British in 1819, Singapore was an integral part of the Malay Archipelago. This historical connection has left an indelible mark on the nation’s identity. Today, Malay is recognized as the national language and one of the four official languages of Singapore. It is enshrined in the national anthem, used in military commands, and taught in schools, ensuring its continued relevance in modern Singaporean society.  
Kampung Glam, where the “Lestari Bahasa, Perkasa Budaya” event took place, stands as a testament to Singapore’s Malay heritage. This historic district, once a thriving Malay settlement, is now a vibrant cultural hub, showcasing traditional architecture, bustling markets, and delicious Malay cuisine.

The Malay Heritage Centre, located within Kampung Glam, provides a fascinating glimpse into the history and traditions of the Malay community. Through interactive exhibits and engaging programs, the center aims to educate and inspire visitors about the rich cultural heritage of Singapore’s Malays.  

Preserving and Promoting Malay Culture

The “Lestari Bahasa, Perkasa Budaya” event is just one example of Singapore’s ongoing efforts to preserve and promote Malay culture. The government actively supports various initiatives, including language programs, cultural festivals, and educational outreach, to ensure that future generations remain connected to their Malay roots.
